Los Angeles rallies past The Bay to clinch top spot in TGL playoffs
The Bay looked to be well on its way to another TGL victory. But two straight chip-ins during singles helped fuel Los Angeles to yet another comeback win, and now it’s the top seed in the playoffs, too.

Another epic comeback for Los Angeles Golf Club has secured the No. 1 spot heading into the TGL playoffs.
Trailing 3-0 through eight holes, LAGC (4-0-1) charged back for the second consecutive match and defeated The Bay Golf Club 5-3 to earn the top seed in the SoFi Cup standings heading into the postseason.
Last week, LAGC rallied from a 4-0 deficit against New York Golf Club to win 5-4 in overtime.
“Just shows how quickly things can change in these matches,” Tommy Fleetwood said, “and happy to come out the right side of it.”
The match didn’t start well for LAGC, as it lost two of the first four holes.
The Bay (4-1-0) won Nos. 3 and 4 after Min Woo Lee drained a 13-footer for birdie on the former and then made another birdie, from eight feet, on the latter.
On the short par-4 6th, Wyndham Clark drove the green from 300-plus yards away, setting up a 10-foot eagle attempt. The Bay then threw the hammer, but it was declined, giving The Bay a 3-0 advantage.
LAGC finally got on the board on No. 9 after Clark drove into the penalty area. Once Sahith Theegala found the fairway, LAGC threw the hammer — which was quickly declined by The Bay.
The comeback continues on No. 10, the first hole of singles.
After both Fleetwood and Lee found the fairway, The Bay threw the hammer, which was accepted. Lee, however, hit his approach into the water. LAGC threw its own hammer, and it was declined by The Bay, meaning LAGC won two points.
Theegala then chipped in from 20 feet away for birdie on the par-4 12th, giving LAGC a 4-3 lead. Fleetwood chipped in on the next hole to keep the match at 4-3.
“With the team, you just get in a rhythm. When I see these guys chip in, I want to play well. I want to hit good shots. You just feed off that energy,” Morikawa said. “I’ve seen it in other team events that I’ve been a part of. But this is very, very fun because it’s just the three of us inside this stadium and essentially like golf, every shot matters.”
Theegala captured the final point of the match on No. 15 and after Clark missed an eight-footer for birdie on the final hole. With Theegala just five feet away for a closing birdie, The Bay conceded and the match was over.
“Honestly, it doesn’t feel great,” Clark admitted. “I think this is what it feels like to be on a team sport. You don’t want to let anyone down.
“We’re looking forward to the playoffs and hopefully we bring our good stuff there.”

The Bay has basically locked up the No. 2 seed as Atlanta Drive GC (No. 3) would need to win a whopping 11 of 15 holes in its season-finale match versus Jupiter Links GC Tuesday night to leapfrog into the second spot.
“I think that’s the one thing that surprised me about this whole experience is how much I care and how much I want to win because obviously it’s something new, like you said. We didn’t know what to expect. I’m pretty pissed off that we lost tonight,” Lowry said.
“I think, if anything, it might be a blessing in disguise going into the playoffs. Might be a bit of a kick in the back side that we need. We can get our head down and focus a little bit better going in there.”
Key moment
With LAGC up 4-3, Lee knocked his approach on the par-4 13th to just three feet, setting up a sure-thing birdie for The Bay. But Fleetwood chipping in from 21 feet away (after Theegala had chipped in on the previous hole) to steal a birdie for LAGC and keep the score 4-3 with just two holes remaining.
Top performer
Theegala won both of his singles matches to secure two of LAGC’s five points. He also rolled in a crucial five-foot par saver on the par-3 7th to limit the early-match damage and keep LAGC in it.
Quoteable
“I hear all the “Min” chants and “let him cook” and “Dr. Chipinski.” It was to give a little poke. I figured it would fire them up. I saw Collin doing it again when Tommy chipped in,” Theegala said after he and Morikawa looked at Lee and returned his signature cell-phone celebration (they “paged Dr. Chipinski” after they had back-to-back chip ins).
