The New York Knicks may be holding their collective breath.
All-Star point guard Jalen Brunson left Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers in overtime after rolling his ankle and did not return.
As Brunson attempted a layup midway through the extra frame, his right foot landed and twisted awkwardly on Lakers guard Austin Reaves’ right foot.
Brunson stayed down for a while and got up gingerly but appeared unable to put much weight on his injured foot.
He was able to stay in to make both ensuing free throws, but exited the game immediately after.
According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, there’s optimism that Brunson only sustained a sprained ankle.
The 28-year-old is averaging 26.1 points and 7.4 assists in 60 games with the Knicks this season and is coming off his second consecutive All-Star appearance.
New York went on to lose 113-109 and fall to 40-22. The Knicks sit third in the Eastern Conference as they continue on a road trip that keeps them in Los Angeles to face the Clippers on Friday before heading to Sacramento, Portland and Golden State.
