JKR says it has patched more than 31,000 square metres of potholes in Kelantan since January this year

The public works department (JKR) says that it has repaired more than 31,180 sq metres of potholes – which is the equivalent of about four and a half football fields – on federal and state roads in Kelantan since January, Bernama reports.

According to state JKR director Nik Soh Yaacoub, the repair work involved 21,580 sq metres of potholes on the federal roads, while 9,600 sq metres of repair work were for state roads. He said that when the department receives reports of potholes, it responds immediately by carrying out repairs within 24 hours to prevent any untoward incidents.

Previously, works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi issued a stern warning to all road maintenance concessionaires to fulfil their responsibilities. This came following an incident on March 21 where two secondary school students, aged 16 and 17, lost their lives on Jalan Sengkang-Felda Inas-Bandar Tenggara in Johor after their motorcycle hit a pothole on the road.

Nanta said that under JKR’s asset maintenance policy, the appointed federal road concessionaire must carry out temporary patching within a day in the event of road damage, with permanent repairs needing to be completed within three days.

For large-scale repair work, an allocation application must be submitted in advance, and the work could be carried out annually and in phases. Such repairs would take between a month and a year, depending on the nature of the work, its complexity as well as the approval of the required allocation.
