Anthony Duclair is taking some leave to reflect on what has been a rocky few days with the New York Islanders.
Head coach Patrick Roy told reporters said that the Islanders will give the 29-year-old “all the time he needs” after he asked for space to reflect during a Thursday morning conversation, per NHL.com’s Stefen Rosner.
It’s unclear how long Duclair’s absence will be, or if he will return before the end of the regular season.
Roy classified his latest conversation with Duclair, who was not at Islanders practice on Thursday, as “positive.”
The leave comes just days after Roy publicly blasted the winger following a 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“He was god-awful. He was god-awful. He had a bad game,” Roy said. “That’s why I didn’t play him a lot. And he’s lucky to be in the lineup. Sorry if I lose it on him right now, but that’s how I feel.”
Roy went on to explain that he considered it “an effort thing” on Duclair’s part and questioned his compete level.
“He’s not skating, he’s not competing, he’s not moving his feet. He’s not playing up to what we expect from him.”
Duclair played just four shifts in the third period of Tuesday’s loss.
He is in the first season of a four-year, $14 million contract, which includes a full no-move clause until 2026. He has seven goals and four assists in 44 games.
