Apple is chasing the thin form factor again. This year, the Cupertino company is rumored to launch the iPhone 17 Air, its thinnest model to date. Now, thanks to a new leak shared by tipster Majin Bu on X, we have an idea of how thin the iPhone 17 Air really is.
Razor-thin dimensions
The post shows what looks like 3D-printed models of the iPhone 17 Pro and the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. When placed side by side, the difference in thickness is hard to ignore. The Pro looks chunky by comparison. But what about the iPhone 17 Air? It’s almost razor–thin.
Based on the leak, the iPhone 17 Air could measure just 5.5mm thick. If that’s accurate, this would make it the thinnest iPhone ever made. For comparison, the iPhone 6—previously Apple’s slimmest—was 6.9mm. Apple hasn’t made anything close to this size in years.
While Apple hasn’t officially confirmed anything, this leak aligns with earlier reports. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to replace the Plus model and serve as a kind of design experiment. Think of it as a testbed for thinner, more compact components, which could eventually make their way to a foldable iPhone.
It’s still unclear what compromises Apple might have to make to achieve that thickness. If you’re worried about battery life, we heard Apple plans to adopt a high-density battery. This means that while the physical size is smaller, it could still pack a decent amount of capacity. The camera bump is still visible. An earlier report suggested that the camera module measures 4.4mm thick. This means that the thickest part of the iPhone 17 Air is around 9.9mm.
Other iPhone 17 Air specs
The iPhone 17 Air will replace Apple’s Plus model. This means that this year, Apple will launch the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, while the Air will replace the Plus, it is rumored to retain some of its dimensions. This includes a 6.9-inch display, although we’re not sure if the thin design of the iPhone 17 Air will allow it to adopt the ProMotion 120Hz display.
It will also come with a single camera setup, which is an odd choice for a phone launching in 2025. So Apple will need to be really creative if it’s hoping to sell the phone. As for performance, it will probably end up using the same A19 chipset that will debut in the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup.
