Indiana Fever waive Calgary native Yvonne Ejim

Yvonne Ejim will need to find a new WNBA home before her career has even started.

The Indiana Fever waived the Calgary native on Wednesday despite selecting her in the third round of April’s entry draft.

Ejim, 23, set program records at Gonzaga for the most points scored in a single season and most games played in a college career.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to my teammates and all my staff here at Gonzaga for putting me in the position I am at today,” Ejim said in a statement upon being drafted.

“To say that I would be able to be in the WNBA draft looking ahead to the start of my professional career is a dream come true. I’m proud of myself and the people that have supported me, my family, friends, and my team. The work is only about to begin and I am excited for what is to come next.”

The forward was one of only five active Division I players to have recorded 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in their career. Ejim was also named player of the year and defensive player of the year in the West Coast Conference.

She was recently among 25 players named to Canada Basketball’s senior women’s national team core.
