‘He’s struggling’ – Michael van Gerwen battling health problem that he can’t shake off
The three time World Darts Champion Michael van Gerwen has been dealing with health concerns. According to friend and fellow darts competitor Vincent van der Voort, Van Gerwen has seen doctors in relation to a ‘virus or infection’. Van Gerwen most recently lost to Niko Springer in the first round of the Players ChampionshipGetty Van der Voort said his fellow Dutchman developed the illness while on holiday in Thailand. Van der Voort told the Darts Draait Door podcast: “He’s been struggling with a virus or infection for quite some time now. “He picked it up during his holiday in Thailand back in early January, and he just hasn’t been able to shake it off. On top of that, he’s not in his best form.” Van der Voort added: “He was already at the doctor’s this morning.” The podcast host, Damian Vlottes, recommended the 35-year-old to take a break from competing but Van der Voort said his friend is not ‘in a position to just skip tournaments’. Despite his health worries, Van Gerwen will play the seventh night of the Premier League Darts in Cardiff on Thursday. The Dutchman will verse World No.1 Luke Humphries who aims for a return to first in the table after losing to Luke Littler last week. Van Gerwen is five points behind Humphries and would love to better his semi-final exit last week. Fans would love to see Van Gerwen match up with Littler again as their rivalry has proven to bring out the best in both. The elder teasingly poked fun at Littler’s near nine dart finish last year which ended the 18-year-old’s three match loss streak to Van Gerwen. Night 7: Van Gerwen’s route to final Semi-finals: Humphries/Van Gerwen v Chris Dobey/ Stephen Bunting Finals: Dobey/Bunting/Humphries/Van Gerwen v Littler/Nathan Aspinall/Gerwyn Price/Rob Cross Littler beat Van Gerwen 6-2 on Night 5AFP The World No.3 has endured a rocky run of results, exiting in the opening round of the Players Championship. He has also failed to earn a trip to the Premier League Darts finals, reaching the semi-finals five times. If Van Gerwen wants the £275,000 winning prize he will have to be laser focused. Also, the winner every night takes home £10,000, a worthy prize of £160,000 across 16 weeks.
