The Grand National 2025 is just days away as the country prepares to stop and watch the most famous horse race of the year.

There will be a maximum of 34 runners at Aintree racecourse this year, a number that has been reduced to hopefully improve safety for horses and jockeys alike.

The Grand National has, incredibly, been run since 1839 when Lottery was the first winner under jockey Jem Mason.

I Am Maximus was the last winner, with Paul Townend riding to victory last year as joint-favourite.

Townend will be riding the defending champion this year as he looks to be the first to go back-to-back since Davy Russell on Tiger Roll in 2018 and ’19.

The 177th edition of the race will be shown live on ITV and streamed on ITVX, while full coverage of the three-day meeting at Aintree is available on Racing TV.

When is the Grand National?

The race begins at 4pm on Saturday April 5 at Aintree.

When are the final Grand National runners confirmed?

The final field is confirmed at the 48-hour declarations, which predictably happen 48 hours before the race begins.

This means we will know the maximum field of 34 runners by 4pm on Thursday April 3.

Who is the favourite to win the Grand National?

Iroko and Stumptown are the two favourites for the Grand National at the time of writing.

Both are available at 9/1, with I Am Maximus just behind at 10/1.
