Square Enix has launched a new website for Final Fantasy 9 to celebrate the game’s upcoming 25th anniversary – and fans are now convinced a remake is coming.

Final Fantasy 9 originally launched in 2000 and while it did not sell as many copies as the previous two instalments in the long-running franchise, it has remained a fan favourite.

The game went on to sell 8.9million copies and an updated version was released on the PlayStation store in 2010 to celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary. In 2021, a leak claimed a full remake was in the works.

Earlier this year, leaker NateTheHate reported that the remake was still in “active development” and would perhaps be released in 2026. Now Square Enix have launched a special 25th anniversary website for Final Fantasy 9 and fans believe they’re finally going to get official confirmation a remake exists.

Final Fantasy 9, which was released on July 7, 2000, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025,” wrote Square Enix on the dedicated website. “We are preparing various projects, including merchandise and collaborations to commemorate the 25th anniversary, so please look forward to it!”

The studio has already shared new artwork featuring the feisty princess Garnet and Zidane alongside a range of official merch, which is due for release in August 2025.
