Legendary former tennis player Roger Federer has been named as the honorary starter for this year’s edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest.

Federer, widely regarded as one of the best players in tennis history, will wave the French Tricolore for the 93rd running of the French endurance classic.

The 43-year-old won 20 Grand Slams across his decades-long career, including a record eight Wimbledon titles. He succeeds French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane in the role of starter.

“It’s a huge honour to have been invited to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an iconic but extremely gruelling race,” said Federer.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the commitment, precision and resilience it demands. Being at the heart of this emblematic event will be a remarkable experience.”

Notably, Federer is the second member of tennis’ so-called ‘Big Three’ to have been named Le Mans starter, as his longtime rival Rafael Nadal was given the honor in 2018.

“It will be a tremendous privilege to welcome Roger Federer as the official starter of the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” said ACO president Pierre Fillon.

“His influence extends far beyond tennis. He is a living legend, admired as much for his achievements as for his human qualities.

His involvement will further boost the appeal of this year’s race, which is already gearing up to be outstanding.”
