Croatia vs Wales: Croatia to win (4/7)

A new era beckons for Wales on Saturday, as they play their first match since Gareth Bale hung up his boots post-World Cup 2022. 

That tournament was ultimately disappointing for Rob Page’s side, who picked up just one point and finished bottom of their group.

Wales are nevertheless among the contenders to qualify for the European Championship from Group D, where they are likely to end up battling Turkey for second place.

Croatia are the favourites to finish first. Arguably the biggest overachievers in international football, this country of under four million people finished third in Qatar and will also compete in the Nations League Finals this summer.

Luka Modric is still going strong for the Vatreni, but some younger talent has also emerged over the last few years. Croatia can kick-start their campaign with a victory this weekend.

Spain vs Norway: Spain to win to nil (10/11)

Norway could be one to watch at Euro 2024. Any team that contains Martin Odegaard and Erling Haaland will be a threat to opposition defences, although the absence of the Manchester City striker for this meeting with Spain significantly reduces his country’s chances of pulling off an upset.

La Roja are now under the management of Luis de la Fuente, who succeeded Luis Enrique following Spain’s disappointing last-16 exit at the World Cup.

The new manager knows his country’s system well, having previously coached Spain’s under-19, under-21 and under-23 teams.

That means there will be no stylistic revolution. Spain will continue to prioritise the domination of possession and the selection of gifted technicians right across the pitch.

Spain’s mastery of the ball means they do not concede many goals at home. A Norway side without Haaland will therefore struggle to find the back of the net in this one.

England vs Ukraine: Harry Kane to score any time (4/6)

Harry Kane became England’s outright all-time leading goalscorer on Thursday when he converted a penalty in a 2-1 victory over Italy.

That was a massive win for the Three Lions. Italy away was their hardest fixture in Group C, so coming out on top means that England are now in pole position to qualify for the Euros.

That does not mean Gareth Southgate will be taking anything for granted, though. And although England are the favourites to beat Ukraine on Sunday, they must not take their opponents lightly.

Southgate could make a few tweaks to his line-up for the game at Wembley, but he is unlikely to enact wholesale changes.

One man who is certain to start is Kane, who may be given a rest for the summer qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia but will be called upon again here.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker is enjoying an excellent season on an individual level and he could add to his international tally here.

Portugal strolled to a 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein on matchday one, as Roberto Martinez began his tenure with a win.

The jury is out on whether or not that is a good thing for Martinez, who could face a difficult decision if Ronaldo intends to carry on until Euro 2024.

Portugal possess an abundance of attacking quality beyond the Al Nassr striker, and we should see some of that talent come to the fore on Sunday.

Luxembourg are not the whipping boys they once were, but this will still be a difficult match for the continental minnows.

Malta vs Italy: Italy/Italy half-time/full-time (4/9)

Italy inexplicably failed to qualify for the World Cup despite being the reigning European champions. And the country’s football fans may start to get the jitters if Roberto Mancini’s men fail to overcome Malta on Sunday.

After being edged out 2-1 by England last time out, Italy are under pressure as they prepare to make the short trip south.

But this is unlikely to be a difficult evening for the Azzurri, who should emerge victorious with a degree of comfort.

Malta put up a decent fight against North Macedonia in their first qualifier, yet they still lost 2-1.

None of their matches since the start of 2022 has been a defeat by more than a one-goal margin, yet this is by far the toughest game they have faced in that time.

If Italy can get their noses in front early on, this should be a comfortable 90 minutes for the Euro 2020 winners.
