Why is Presidents Day celebrated?
This date was originally established to commemorate the birthday of George Washington, who was born on February 11, 1732, according to the Julian calendar in use at the time. However, when England and its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752, his birthday was moved to February 22.
During his presidency from 1789 to 1797, Americans celebrated his birthday on both dates. In 1885, February 22 was officially recognized as a holiday in honor of Washington. In 1968, Congress considered the possibility of unifying the celebrations of the birthdays of Washington and Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, into a single holiday called President’s Day.
However, lawmakers from Virginia, Washington’s home state, opposed the idea, and it was not approved. Despite this, that same year, Congress passed the Monday Holidays Bill, which sought to move most holidays to Monday, so Americans could enjoy long weekends.
The law was implemented in 1971, and since then, Washington’s birthday is celebrated on the third Monday in February instead of February 22.
Is Presidents Day an official holiday?
Yes, although only 24 states officially observe the holiday known as Presidents Day, others celebrate it as Washington’s Birthday or, in some cases, a combination of both. In the United States, each state has the autonomy to establish its own holidays for state employees and public school students, meaning not all follow the federal calendar.
What will be closed on Presidents Day 2025?
As a federal holiday, many government offices and banks will be closed today. While stores and restaurants will remain open, institutions such as banks, post offices, government offices, and stock markets will not open.
Bank branches such as Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, Chase, Truist, and CitiBank, among others, will be closed on Monday, February 17th and will resume normal activities on Tuesday, February 18th. Additionally, most schools will also be closed.
