Crosby added to Canada’s roster for world championship

Captain Canada is putting his super suit back on for some international hockey. Team Canada is set to get a huge boost to their lineup as all-time great Sidney Crosby has been added to the team’s roster for the 2025 IIHF men’s hockey world championship, Hockey Canada announced Sunday. Though the hockey world is only months removed from seeing Crosby don the red and white, it’s been 10 years since he put on the sweater for the world championship. He made his last appearance for the tournament in 2015, helping lead Canada to its 25th gold medal. Crosby is, of course, one of the most decorated international players of all time. Past his two Olympic gold medals and his most recent win in the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off, the Cole Harbour, N.S. native is a 2016 World Cup of Hockey champ and won the world juniors in 2005. Heading into the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, Crosby had gone 26-0-0 in his last 26 international games, and while Canada lost to the U.S.A. in the group stages of the tourney, tarnishing Crosby’s record, the 37-year-old got the last laugh. After winning the 2015 world championships and captaining the team, he joined the Triple Gold Club as one of the only players in hockey to win a world championship, Stanley Cup and Olympic Gold. He’s also the only member of the club to captain all three teams. In years past, Crosby has often been too busy playing playoff hockey to participate in the international tournament, but his Penguins struggled to a 34-36-12 record this season, relegating them to seventh in the Metropolitan division and clearing the captain’s calendar. Despite the down year for Pittsburgh, Crosby finished the season — his 20th in the NHL — with 33 goals and 91 points. Puck drops on the 2025 IIHF world championship on May 9, with Canada’s first game coming against Slovakia on the 10th. Sweden and Denmark are the host nations for this iteration of the tourney.
