China Announces U.S Film Import Reduction

It’s official, the China Film Administration says the country is set to reduce the number of Hollywood films it imports in response to the escalating tariff war with the United States.

Instead, it will look to increase film imports from other countries. In a statement released on Thursday (via THR), they say:

“The US government’s erroneous practice of imposing excessive tariffs on China is likely to further diminish the Chinese audience’s favourable perception of American films. We will adhere to market principles, respect audience choices and moderately reduce the import volume of American films.”

Despite a reduction in the importance of Hollywood releases in China in recent years, the country still remains the second largest cinema market in the world.

The move follows in the wake of US President Donald Trump announcing further tariff increases for Chinese imports which now stand at 125%.

At the same time, many of the other countries slugged by tariffs in the past few days have seen those tariffs paused for around three months.

Under the most recent trade agreements, China committed to releasing 34 foreign films per year under revenue-share terms. On Monday, China’s Film Bureau had just approved Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” for a theatrical release on April 30th.
