Chelsea legend Joe Cole makes Premier League top five prediction
Chelsea legend Joe Cole admits he’s worried about Chelsea’s chances of finishing in the Premier League’s top five this season. Arsenal’s midweek demolition of Real Madrid means that English teams are now guaranteed five spots in next season’s elite European competitions. Despite the additional place on offer, the Blues are far from guaranteed of qualifying, given their patchy form and the fierce competition. Chelsea will fancy their chances of taking a significant step towards finishing ahead of one of Manchester City and Newcastle this weekend when they host relegation-haunted Ipswich at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. There remaining fixtures, however, look daunting on paper and Cole admits they cannot afford to drop many more points on home soil. It’s really tough.’ Fellow TNT pundit Peter Crouch agreed with his former England teammate and predicted Ezno Marwesca’s side would fail to complete on of their main objectives for the season. He said: ‘I think Forest get third, I think Newcastle get fourth and I think City might sneak in there. I think Newcastle look the strongest. ‘It’s a poor season for City with the standards they’ve set. But if they get an FA Cup and get in the Champions League places it’s damage limitations. FA Cup is an incredible trophy.’ By contrast, Maresca, meanwhile, remains confident his squad has what it takes to fend off the likes of City and Newcastle. Chelsea will hope Cole Palmer can regain his best form (Picture: Getty) Speaking earlier this week he said: ‘I feel good. I know when you are Chelsea head coach you have to win games, no matter if [the team is] young or old. You have to win games. ‘Since I joined this club, I have been convinced this squad is good enough to compete and win games and I don’t have any doubts that game after game, month after month, and season after season, we will be better and better and better, and we can close that gap that is between us and one or two more Premier League clubs.’ He added: ‘We are there [in the top four] – and we have been there all season – so it’s our duty to try to finish there. ‘And as I’ve said, this club belongs in the Champions League so we have to do everything in our hands possible to bring the club there.’
