Chappell Roan & Elton John played “Pink Pony Club” & “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” at Oscar party

Elton John held the 33rd annual edition of his AIDS Foundation Oscar viewing party at West Hollywood Park on Sunday night (3/2), and he had Chappell Roan on hand to perform. “I just freaked out when I heard her,” Elton told the star-studden crowd (which included soon-to-be tourmates Lucy Dacus and Katie Gavin), introducing her. “I interviewed her and fell in love with her and the album. She’s so kind to do this. She’s one of the biggest stars in the world right now. Not only does she speak with her voice on stage but off it.”

Chappell played a full set of her own songs at the show, but she also covered Elton’s “Your Song” (which she also shared a cover of on YouTube five years ago, ahead of her meteoritic rise), and at the end of her set she brought Elton out to join her for a rendition of his “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” and her “Pink Pony Club.” She gave him a pink cowboy hat before the latter, telling him, “Thank you so much for believing in me. You made it so I could be the artist I could be,” and adding, “He played it first, y’all. And I’m so grateful that you would have me here. You have sacrificed so much for the queer community, and you made it so I could be the artist I could be.” Watch video from her set below.

It was a busy weekend for Chappell, who also won Best International Artist and Best International Song for “Good Luck, Babe!” at the BRIT Awards. She didn’t attend in person, but she dedicated her speech (given via video) accepting Best International Artist “to trans artists, to drag queens, to fashion students, sex workers, and Sinead O’Connor. Because of all those people – they have laid the groundwork for me to be here today. I did not give up because of them, and I will continue going because of them.”

“Chappell Roan was born through experiencing queer joy,” she said. “It’s so special, I had to write an entire album about it.” Watch video of her speeches below, as well.
