The German’s deal currently has two years remaining after he penned an extension last May. Since his appointment in October 2023, Rohl has won 34 of his 89 matches in charge at Hillsborough. The 35-year-old has since become a beloved figure amongst Owls supporters. After guiding the club to Championship survival last season, his first full campaign ended in a top half finish. Wednesday secured 12th place with a 1-1 draw at Watford on the final day of the season on Saturday. Following the match, Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I think after the game today, I had a view of my last 560 days at this club to look in their faces. How they [the fans] call my name – its always special. “The heartbeat of this club are the fans, they are always there. I have never had a negative experience with these fans, always positive. “We don’t know what happens in the next couple of days. I know what I want to do, my picture is very clear but it’s also part of the decision-making of the club. “I will not forget this place. It doesn’t matter what happens now. To have such a relationship so quickly, such a belief, such hope, such a respectful togetherness. Rohl is attracting interest from Southampton as well as clubs in Germany and Saudi ArabiaGetty “I can’t have expected this when I took over. It will be part of the bottom of my heart.” Rohl has had to contend with off-field issues at Hillsborough during his tenure. The EFL have placed the club under a transfer embargo multiple times in the last two seasons. Meanwhile, owner Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay the players’ wages on time in March due to a ‘temporary issue’ involving cash flow. Southampton previously targeted a move for Rohl in December before replacing Russell Martin with Ivan Juric. The Saints are now on the look out for a new boss once again after sacking Juric following last month’s relegation. Rohl is a familiar face at St. Mary’s after an eight-month spell as Ralph Hassenhuttl’s assistant during the 2018/19 season. Simon Rusk has been in interim charge at the top-flight’s bottom club since Juric’s exit. Southampton have three matches remaining to avoid equalling the lowest points tally in Premier League history. After 35 matches, they are level on Derby’s record low of 11 points from the 2007/08 campaign. More to follow.
