Tyler Black‘s path back to the big leagues has hit a detour.

The Canadian and Milwaukee Brewers prospect suffered a fractured hamate in his right hand and is expected to miss the first six to eight weeks of the season, according to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Black, a Toronto native and son of longtime sports broadcaster Rod Black, made his MLB debut in 2024 with the Brewers. Over 18 games, he picked up 10 hits and three stolen bases, but struggled to the tune of a .561 OPS.

The 24-year-old has emerged as one of Milwaukee’s top prospects in recent seasons, including a breakout in 2023 that saw him hit 18 homers and steal 55 bases. He was named Canadian Baseball Network‘s top Canuck minor league hitter in the affiliated ranks.

Black entered Brewers camp this spring competing for a spot on the major-league roster, but hit just .147 and was optioned to triple-A on March 22.

At triple-A Nashville in 2024, the six-foot-one left-handed hitter slashed .258/.374/.429 with 14 homers and 20 stolen bases over 102 games.

Milwaukee originally drafted Black 33rd overall in the 2021 draft out of Wright State University.
