Canada Basketball names Steve Baur as general manager of women’s team

The first of three major roles at Canada Basketball has been filled. Steve Baur was named general manager and vice president, high performance of the senior women’s team, Canada Basketball announced on Thursday. Baur had held the interim position since former GM Denise Dignard retired in October. He’s been with Canada Basketball since 2014, serving as an assistant coach at three Olympics. Baur was previously head coach at Acadia University, where he led the Axemen to three consecutive national championship appearances “Having grown within this program, working closely with our athletes, staff, and stakeholders at every level, it’s an honour to step into this role,” Baur said. “A strong foundation has been established, and I am committed to building upon it, guided by a clear vision to compete for medals on the world stage.” CEO Mike Bartlett said Baur is “widely respected” across the organization. “His genuine commitment to fostering meaningful relationships across the North American and global basketball landscape will continue to serve as a competitive advantage for our program — something he has consistently demonstrated since assuming senior leadership responsibilities on an interim basis,” Bartlett said. The first order of business for Baur will be hiring a new head coach following Victor Lapena’s departure. The men’s team, led by GM Rowan Barrett, also has a vacancy at the position. Canada’s women’s basketball team has competed at four consecutive Olympics but is still looking for its first-ever medal. Baur had held the interim position since former GM Denise Dignard retired in October.
