Brentford vs Brighton predictions

We are in the final straight of the Premier League season and several teams do not have anything meaningful left to play for.

Brentford and Brighton do not quite fit into that category, however. The Seagulls have had to drop their Champions League hopes after a poor run of form in recent weeks, but both these sides could still qualify for Europe.

With the Premier League guaranteed five Champions League spots for 2025/26, the sixth-place finisher is currently set to qualify for the Europa League and the side that ends the season in seventh will go forward to the Conference League.

However, if the FA Cup winner finishes in the top six – Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are still standing in that competition – an extra European berth will be available via the league. 

That scenario, which feels more likely to come to pass than not, would see the eighth-placed team advance to the Conference League. Because of that, neither Brentford nor Brighton should put their feet up just yet.

Brighton are in a better position going into the weekend. They sit 10th at present, but they are level on points with Fulham and Bournemouth in the two places above them.

Brentford are five points back, so a defeat here would in effect knock them out of the race. A win, on the other hand, would keep Thomas Frank’s team in contention. Qualifying for the Conference League would be an exceptional achievement for a club of their size.

Even if Europe proves a bridge too far, Brentford will be keen to finish in the top half of the Premier League. 

They have only done that once before, in 2022/23, but replicating the feat this season would arguably be even more impressive when you consider the Bees lost their former talisman Ivan Toney last summer.

Brighton have a larger budget than Brentford and they have been in the top tier for longer, so their sights are usually set higher. However, a defeat this weekend would leave them in danger of being overtaken by Frank’s charges, who ground out a 1-1 draw with Arsenal last time out.

Brentford have had a strange season in one sense. They began the campaign by winning eight of their first nine home games, and taking just two points from a possible 27 on the road.

The pattern flipped on its head in the new year, as Brentford suddenly won five consecutive away games while going seven home matches without a win.

You have to go all the way back to December 7 to find the last time Brentford triumphed at the Gtech, but we are backing them to finally end that barren run on Saturday.

Brighton have gone off the boil, their last four outings yielding just two points. Only Southampton and Leicester City have worse records in that time.

Matches involving Brentford have averaged 3.13 goals, as have games featuring Brighton. Only four teams have been involved in higher-scoring fixtures.

Meanwhile both teams have scored in 69 percent of Brighton’s encounters, second only to Fulham. Brentford rank joint-third on 66 percent.

Having previously played second fiddle to the aforementioned Toney, Bryan Mbeumo has really stepped up this season.

The Cameroon international has relished being the main man. He has scored 16 goals to date, a tally bettered by only Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak and Chris Wood.

Mbeumo is a threat wherever he plays, but he does his best work from the right flank – and that is where he is set to start on Saturday.

Brighton have struggled to keep opposition attacks quiet recently (even Leicester scored twice against them last time out), so Mbeumo should get chances in this one.
