Blues GM doesn’t expect defenceman Torey Krug to play again

Torey Krug‘s career might be over, according to St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong.

The 34-year-old defenceman’s future was one of the topics Armstrong discussed during the team’s season-ending press conference Tuesday.

Krug missed the entire season after undergoing surgery in September to address pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle.

While Armstrong hasn’t closed the door, he told reporters he doesn’t expect Krug to play again.

The injury originated from a bone fracture Krug sustained earlier in his career.

Krug attempted to rehab the injury before electing for surgery and said in September he was unsure when he would be able to return.

“We don’t really know that to be honest, it’s just something that I gotta take care of and kind of take it day by day, week by week, month by month and go from there,” an emotional Krug said. “Looking forward, I can’t forecast too much. Just gotta stay in the moment.”

The Livonia, Mich., native has played 13 seasons in the NHL with the Boston Bruins and Blues and recorded 483 points (89 goals and 394 assists) in 778 career games.

Krug joined the Blues as a free agent in October 2020, signing a seven-year, $45.5 million contract.

St. Louis was eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs after losing Game 7 in double overtime to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday night.
