Blue Jays’ Daulton Varsho goes hitless in first rehab game with triple-A Buffalo

Daulton Varsho‘s rehab stint is likely off to a slower start than he had hoped.

The Toronto Blue Jays centre fielder returned to action on Tuesday night with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons, batting third and serving as the club’s designated hitter.

In an 8-4 extra-inning loss, Varsho went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and a hit-by-pitch.

It was almost a much happier ending for Varsho and the Bisons, as the 28-year-old big-leaguer drove a ball 342 feet into the gap with the winning run on second in the bottom of the ninth. However, Rochester Red Wings left fielder Darren Baker ran down the ball for an out.

With the appearance for the Bisons, he joined his dad, Gary Varsho, who played in Buffalo in 1994, as the only known father-son duo to suit up for the franchise.

The outing was the third of Varsho’s rehab assignment, as the five-year MLB veteran spent Saturday and Sunday with the class-A Dunedin Blue Jays. In those two games, Varsho went 0-for-6 with two strikeouts while returning to centre field in Sunday’s game.

Varsho, the reigning AL Gold Glove winner in centre field, underwent shoulder surgery in September, which has limited his ability to throw the ball from the outfield.

He appeared in 136 games for the Blue Jays last season, batting .214 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs.
