Arne Slot threw his support behind Trent Alexander-Arnold after the full-back was roundly booed in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with ten-man Arsenal, insisting he will always back his players ‘no matter what’.

Alexander-Arnold started on the substitutes bench on Merseyside, but was sent on just moments before Mikel Merino’s equaliser in the 70th minute, with Conor Bradley on a booking.

Large sections of the Anfield crowd immediately made their feelings known over Alexander-Arnold’s impending move to Real Madrid on a free transfer, as loud boos and jeers echoed around the stadium.

Chants of, ‘There’s only one Conor Bradley’, could also be heard, while each and every touch Alexander-Arnold made in the following 20 minutes was greeted with another chorus of audible boos.

After coming back from 2-0 down, the Gunners held firm to rescue a point against the newly crowned English champions, despite visitors losing Merino to a red card in the 79th minute.

The result means Arsenal now sit two points clear of third-placed Newcastle, who beat Chelsea 2-0 earlier in the afternoon.

‘In general and in life, the good thing about living in Europe is that everybody can have their opinion and that’s the same here in Liverpool,’ Slot told Sky Sports when quizzed on the boos Alexander-Arnold faced.

‘There were people that were not so happy with him, there were a lot of people who were happy with him, they clapped for him.

‘A few of them booed. I think everybody is allowed to have their opinion and towards the end, I think more and more people were positive.

‘But for me, it’s simple. I owe it to the team and to the fans, to everyone, to play a team that can win a game of football and Trent showed why I brought him in because he had two or three incredible balls.’

According to Slot, the impact Alexander-Arnold made against Arsenal could have secured his side three points on another day.

‘We were very close to winning it, partly because of him, so for me, it’s not that difficult,’ the Liverpool head coach added.

‘For the fans, they have the reaction they want but I will always back my players, the one that I lead, the ones that wear a red shirt. I will always back them, no matter what.’

Asked whether Alexander-Arnold would have been shocked by the boos, Slot responded: ‘I don’t know.

‘First of all, they sang for Steven Gerrard which is a nice thing to do I think. They sang for Conor Bradley which is also a nice thing to do because he deserves it. Conor Bradley played a very good game.

‘I think it was just before Trent took the free-kick, I heard more people clapping for him or hoping that he would score than people booing him.

‘Everyone has the right to their opinion but it would not be fair to all the Liverpool fans if we only focussed on the few that booed. And if they want to, it’s fine by me, but there were a lot of people who were really positive about him as well.’

Alexander-Arnold’s long-time team-mate, Andy Robertson, meanwhile, said it was not his place to judge fans on the hostile welcome they gave Alexander-Arnold inside the ground.

‘First of all, I’m disappointed to lose my best mate. He’s an amazing player and an amazing person,’ the Liverpool left-back told Sky Sports.

‘He has pushed me through and made me a better player. His legacy will always be there, he’s done so much for this club.
