The Anora Ending Explained
Now, that's a pretty bleak ending, but what does it all mean?
Ani is a sex worker who is so used to the world only valuing her sexuality, that when someone like Igor genuinely does something nice for her, she has no idea how to reciprocate. And when he wants to kiss her, she realizes she's so hurt she's not sure how to have an emotional connection.
In that moment at the end, Ani finally comes to terms with the true cost of the whole ordeal. And it causes her to weep. She's just gone through an immense trauma. She was living out a dream that became a nightmare.
The movie ends on an ambiguous note, leaving the audience to come up with their own thoughts on the lasting impact of these events on Anora's life.
We're also forced to deal with the broader themes of class and power when it comes to the haves and have-nots of this world.
Anora was used as a pawn in Vanya's world, and he never stopped to think about how that would affect her. And she bought into the whole scenario because her life was so bad, she had no choice but to hope for the best.
This power imbalance is underscored by how the oligarch treats her and how they treat their employees as well. Nothing matters to them.
At the end of the movie, we hope Ani sees her worth, but we're also fearful and accepting that she will inevitably return to the life before.
Summing Up the Anora Ending
Anora was a powerful movie, and Mikey Madison's portrayal of the character is one I will not soon forget.
While the ending may be bleak in some people's eyes, I maintain that Ani is a woman driven to shut people up, and possibly she will spend the next part of her life exceeding whatever those Oligarch's expectations of her might be.
I'd love to hear your interpretations of the story and the ending of the movie.
