The official voice cast for actor/filmmaker Andy Serkis’ long-gestating animated adaptation of George Orwell’s classic political novel “Animal Farm” has been announced.
Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Laverne Cox, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons, Kathleen Turner and Iman Vellani will all lend their vocal talents to the project alongside Serkis.
The project was officially announced in late 2012 when London-based mo-cap studio The Imaginarium scored the film rights to Orwell’s novel, but talk of Serkis’ involvement was around for years before that.
Nick Stoller (“The Muppets,” “Strokes”) penned the story of a group of animals who rebel against their human owners and take over the farm – winning their independence.
Their uprising over, they create a utopian environment based on equality, but a cunning pig named Napoleon (Rogen) twists the original intent – eliminating his rivals and enacting commandments.
The original work was a heavily allegorical commentary on the Russian revolution of 1917 and the subsequent Stalinist regime of the Soviet Union.
Aniventure and Imaginarium are producing with Adam Nagle, David Rosenbaum, Jonathan Cavendish, and Serkis. Harrelson and Matt Reeves executive produce and animation is being provided by Cinesite.
“Animal Farm” is reportedly targeting a July 11th release in cinemas.
