Nearly two-thirds of Americans say President Trump has not done enough to try and lower costs for everyday goods, according to a new poll released Thursday.
In the CNN poll, conducted by SRSS at the end of Trump’s fourth week in office, 62 percent of respondents say the president has “not gone far enough” in trying to reduce prices, while 27 percent say he has “been about right” in his approach and 11 percent say he’s gone too far.
Democrats, at 73 percent, are more likely to say Trump has not gone far enough, but a significant share of Republicans, at 47 percent, say the same. About 65 percent of independents also say the president has not done enough, the poll shows.
Looking at the ideological divide, 74 percent of self-identified liberals say Trump has not gone far enough to try and lower prices, while 65 percent of moderates and 50 percent of conservatives say the same, according to the data.
Trump has taken several bold steps since taking office to make good on his campaign promises — from pardoning defendants charged for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, to levying tariffs on foreign imports to slashing the federal workforce to curb government spending.
Many Democrats have sought to hammer Trump on what they say is a failure to prioritize lowering costs for Americans, which many voters cited as a primary reason for wanting him back in office ahead of his victory last November.
The president has distanced himself, though, from a rise in inflation, saying, “I had nothing to do with that,” and seeking to blame it on his predecessor, former President Biden.
The same CNN poll shows Trump’s approval rating underwater, with 47 percent of adults saying they approve of the job he’s doing and 52 percent saying they disapprove.
The CNN poll of 1,206 U.S. adults was conducted from Feb. 13-17, 2025, and has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
