49ers make decision on Brock Purdy contract as QB looks to join Dak Prescott $60m per year territory
Brock Purdy is in for a pay rise but not to the extent he wants. The 25-year-old is seeking a deal that sees him land in similar territory to the NFL’s current highest-paid quarterback, Dallas Cowboys star Dak Prescott, who is on $60 million a year, but reports have emerged he’s likely to fall short. Brock Purdy’s new contract may not top Dak Prescott’s deal after allGetty Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported on Wednesday that despite there initially being a possibility Purdy would become the highest paid quarterback ever, that is now unlikely. However, Purdy is still in line for a dramatic pay increase with his new contract still set to land him over $50 million a year. “Earlier in the 2024 season, it seemed possible that Purdy could surpass Dak Prescott‘s $60 million annual clip with the Cowboys if he had another stellar campaign and deep playoff run,” Schultz wrote. “While that now seems less likely, multiple sources insist that Purdy could still land ‘anywhere from $50-$55 million, or potentially more.'” Purdy is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie deal and all parties expect a new deal to be signed ahead of the 2025 season. It’s deemed unthinkable a deal won’t be reached whether now or later in the offseason. “There’s no doubt who the 49ers’ quarterback of the future is: Brock Purdy,” Schultz stated. “While sources don’t believe a contract extension is imminent, FOX Sports has learned that both sides are actively negotiating with the intent to finalize a deal before the 2025 season.” Last year was a poor one for Purdy and the 49ers who succumbed to injuries and finished last in the NFC West. Although, there are higher expectations coming into the new season with Purdy getting two invaluable offensive skill players back in running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who were hurt for much of last year. Purdy and general manager John Lynch have a good relationship with one anotherGetty Other NFL insiders have also shared just how intense contract negotiations are as Purdy eyes a historic contract. Albert Breer appeared on The Rich Eisen Show and shed light on the current negotiations between Purdy’s agents and the 49ers. “I think the number, I think that the Niners would like to keep it in the 4s and Purdy’s camp in the 5s,” Breer said. “I think that they that they weren’t able to kind of get some traction early, shows there is a little bit of a divide between the sides right now, and it’s going to take some time to get through this.” NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported what the 49ers and Lynch’s initial offer was to Purdy, proving Breer’s report to be correct. “49ers playing hardball with Purdy is very on brand,” La Canfora wrote on X.
