Terracotta tiles are laid in various patterns across the floors and fitting room walls of this golf apparel shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea, designed by LA studio 22RE.

The store in the Californian seaside town references the area's famed natural beauty and Spanish-style architecture.

"Drawing inspiration from the cypress and Douglas fir trees of the region, the design embraces the essence of Carmel's landscapes while reflecting the spirit of the great outdoors," said 22RE.

The studio placed the service counter inside a central, partially enclosed booth so that the interiors could be fully visible from both storefront windows.

Between the glass and the booth is a raised area covered in grass-hued carpet, resembling a small putting green.

"The store's thoughtfully refined layout integrates two distinct storefronts into a seamless and cohesive retail experience, intentionally designed to elevate functionality and maintain aesthetic cohesion," said the studio.

Scalloped plastered walls are finished in Portola's Brooks Roman Clay shade, creating "a warm and tactile atmosphere reminiscent of a golf clubhouse" according to 22RE.

Vertical boards of Douglas fir trim the scallop peaks, matching the millwork for door and mirror frames.

Across the floor, terracotta-toned Zia tiles are laid straight-stack in the front area, then switched to a herringbone pattern towards the rear.

Here, a minimalist metal clothing rail for displaying products is set into a wood-lined niche, while another niche has a velvet cushion to be used as a seat for shoppers.

A drum-shaped walnut podium also sits below a ruched-fabric Celestia pendant by Tobia + Afra Scarpa for Flos.

Custom door handles were created for the store, hewn from wood into double semi-cylindrical pulls for the fitting room doors.

Inside, the Zia tiles continue across the floor and up the walls to envelop the spaces, which are reflected in full-height mirrors.

The dressing room also features a single Foglia sconce by Studio Tetrarch for Valenti, "adding a sculptural modern element to the space" said 22RE.

This isn't the first store that 22RE has worked on for Malbon – the studio also designed the brand's Miami location, which is lined with pale-green stucco informed by the city's colours and golf courses.

Founded by Dean Levin in 2021, the firm has also previously completed the offices for a creative music agency featuring 1970s-influenced meeting spaces.
