Sauron, also known as the Dark Lord, is the primary antagonist of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, both of which are based on books by British author J. R. R. Tolkien. Tolkien wrote an enormous legendarium detailing thousands of years of history, all centring on his fictional high fantasy universe commonly known as Middle-earth.
